06 · Starting Counseling: What to Expect

Your first step, explained

Reaching out takes courage. Here is what to expect when you start counseling at Bridgeway.

Starting counseling

  1. Reach out. Join the wait list or call (606) 202-7654. Referrals from doctors, schools, and agencies are welcome.
  2. Paperwork. You'll complete intake forms and consents before your first visit. For children, a parent or guardian is involved in this step.
  3. First visit. Your counselor will ask about what brings you in, your history, and your goals. You can share at your own pace.
  4. A plan together. You and your counselor agree on goals, how often to meet, and whether sessions will be in person or by telehealth.
  5. Ongoing sessions. Most sessions last about 45–60 minutes. Progress is reviewed together along the way.

Tips for getting the most from counseling

  • Write down what you want to talk about before each session.
  • Be honest about what is and isn't helping.
  • Practice skills between sessions.
  • It's okay to ask questions about how counseling works.
