What it can look like
- Frequent or intense outbursts that are hard to calm
- Aggression toward others or themselves
- Ongoing defiance or arguing
- Big reactions to small changes or transitions
- Trouble at school or with friends
- Withdrawal, sadness, or worry beneath the anger
Things that can help
- Stay calm first. A regulated adult helps a child regulate.
- Name the feeling: "You're really frustrated right now."
- Keep routines predictable and give warnings before transitions.
- Notice and praise the behavior you want to see more of.
- Talk after the storm, not during it.
When to reach out
Consider counseling if outbursts are getting more frequent, safety is a concern, or the stress is affecting the whole family.
How counseling helps
Counseling helps children build words and tools for their feelings and gives parents practical strategies for home. Family therapy can strengthen communication for everyone. At Bridgeway, counseling and occupational therapy can work together when a child also has sensory or regulation needs.
